I like you OP. You drive a Jeep, you have red WASD keys, and you do things yourself. Also props on the no head unit idea, I have to stash my faceplate in the console when I go into the city. Since I never have doors on, there's nothing else to lock :D

so, the first place a thief would look? ;)

you have red WASD keys
I always felt that ESDF is better. That way, you can have the little mark on the F key under your index finger as usual and you also have more keys available on the left side of your hand.

Do they make one with red esdf keys?

Curious to hear your impressions of that BT receiver. I've tried a couple different implementations of BT audio in my car and i've just never been satisfied with the quality, though i've never used that nice of a receiver.

it works good for me, but my car has never had great quality. i have a 98 jeep wrangler with factory speakers, it sounds the exact same as my factory and aftermarket head units. but all the reviews on the product are good.

I bought this guy and few weeks ago and I love it!

Bluetooth will always sound crappy unless the receiver supports aptX audio streaming.
The problem is not all phones support aptX (none of the iPhones have it)...

I've got this one and I love it. Its maybe the third different BT receiver I've tried and the sound is great. The other two I tried were tinny sounding. The homespot has decent dynamic range and doesn't sound over compressed. Plus, the NFC is a great feature if your phone supports it. It will auto connect once you set it up on your phone, but if it drops or doesn't reconnect then all you gotta do is swipe it. (Tbh though, it has a better connection than the other receivers I've tried.) Alternatively, you can swipe to disconnect.

Bluetooth has come a long way. I had a HU with Bluetooth 1.0 stereo streaming and it sounded awful. My mother just got a new Ram with Bluetooth 2.0 or 3.0, can't remember, and it sounds just as good as hooking up an aux cable.

Great idea, especially if you've got a classic car and don't want to ruin the factory dash by hacking in a modern head unit. I'm planning to do this in my old Studebaker and using the factory radio knob as the power/volume control.

that'll be awesome! post a build log when your done.
